Es war nicht einfach, aber es hat sich gelohnt. Ich habe mir online das Buch "Die Geschichte der Mafia" von Salvatore Lupo bestellt und nun ist das Werk vollbracht. Auf 355 Seiten, inklusive Quellennachweisen, lädt der Autor, ein sizilianischer Historiker, der an den Universitäten Palermo und Catania lehrt, ein, die Geschichte der Mafia seit den 1860er Jahren zu verfolgen und zu verstehen.
Es geht hierbei nicht so sehr um die zweite Nachkriegszeit und die Mafiakriege, die verglichen zum Rest, nur einen kleinen Teil einnehmen, sondern um die Anfänge, die Ursprünge und das weite Beziehungsgeflecht dieser Organisation. Man erfährt, wie sich die Organisation über den Lauf der Jahre verändert hat, wie einfache Feldwächter zu "Mafiosi" aufsteigen und wie etliche Familien über den Lauf von Jahrzehnten immer wieder im Zusammenhang mit Geschehnissen, die mit der Cosa Nostra in Verbindung gebracht werden, auftauchen. Hinzukommen die Verbindungen nach Amerika, die detailliert aufgeschlüsselt werden und die Dialektik, die sich in dieser Beziehung offenbart. Auch die seit Anbeginn vorhandenen Beziehungen und Wechselwirkungen zur Politik und vor allem Verwaltung wird analysiert.
Das Buch liest sich nicht einfach, ist wissenschaftlich-soziologisch verfasst und verlangt Aufmerksamkeit, um sich Namen, Orte und Geschehnisse zu merken und immer wieder ins Gedächtnis zu rufen. Jedoch bietet es einen detaillierten Einblick in die Entstehung und Weiterentwicklung der Cosa Nostra sowie die Verstrickungen mit Politik und Geschäft (dem grossen Business).
Das (gebrauchte) Buch habe ich hier bestellt.

It was not easy but it was worth it!
I ordered online "History of the Mafia" by Salvatore Lupo and these days I finished reading the 355 pages (including sources). The author, a well-known and respected sicilian historian teaching at the universities in Palermo and Catania, invites the reader to explore, follow and understand the history of the mafia from the 1860s on.
The book is not dealing that much with the post-war era and the so called "mafia wars". This is only a small part compared to the rest. The author wants the reader to learn more about the beginnings, roots and the huge network relations used by (not only!) the Cosa Nostra as an organisation.
You learn how the organisation developed itself through the years, in some ways in close contact to the society, in others independent from it. He explains the process of starting as a loose alliance of field guards who became "mafiosi" and how some family names over all these years show up again and again when it comes to mafia related crimes or mentions. Besides this he takes the sicilian-american connection in consideration which is described into the deep and also the dialectic which is revealed in this relationship. Also the close relation and interplay to legislative power as well as the administration is analyzed.
The book itself is not that easy to read. It's a scientific-sociological approach and requires attention to memorize names, places and events. But it offers a detailed insight to evolution and development of the organisation called Cosa Nostra
as well as its relation to legal power and (the big) business.
